One of the greatest gifts we have as people is free will. It gives us licence to choose who we socialise with, our profession, where to live, what to eat and wear. The list goes on. There are only a few things we don’t get to choose, such as the family we are born into, or our height.

I have always believed that every created being has a purpose in life. What bothers me is why some people go to their graves without having fulfilled that purpose. If something is supposed to happen it should happen, right? I used to spend hours pondering this question. People in my circle seemed just as baffled as I was.

My life only started to change for the better when I discovered the power of vision boards and how to use them.

What Is A Vision Board?

A vision board is more than having a great vision of your future and daydreaming about it. If that was the case every daydreamer would be living their dream life.

A dream board or vision board is a collage of images, pictures, and affirmations of one’s dreams and desires, designed to serve as a source of inspiration and motivation.

What makes a vision board powerful is not the images on it, or the affirmations associated with them, but the feelings which they invoke. Like an actor getting into character for a role, you need to see yourself speaking in a certain way, doing certain things, feeling a particular way. The images collated on the vision board help you do that. The affirmations, when repeated with emotion, reinforce the message in your subconscious mind.

When visualisation strategies are practiced regularly and consistently, over time you will notice that your behaviour, circumstances and environment start to change to match what is on your vision board.

There are three tell-tale signs that you don’t have a vision board.

1. You are easily distracted

Being easily distracted demonstrates a lack of belief in yourself and your dreams. Why? When you believe in your dreams you focus 100%. It doesn’t matter how attractive an offer is, you will turn it down so that you can pursue your dream. That’s why successful people are known to say NO more than they say yes. They are not tempted or distracted by the “shiny toy” syndrome.

You can’t keep changing course when you have a destination in mind. It shows lack of planning, lack of vision. Your vision board is your road map to the future you desire.

2. You have more than three priorities

Creating a vision board forces you to evaluate and focus on what you really want. Whilst it is true that you can choose anything you want, it is also true that you can’t do everything you want.

You have just 24 hours in a day. Even with the help of technology is impossible to do everything.

When you have a vision board it helps you stay on track and focused on your goals. Your vision board is not set in stone. It will change as you change and grow. Focusing on 3 priorities at a time prevents you from diluting your energy.

3. You don't know what you will be doing in five years

I remember listening to a talk by Dr Cindy Trimm. She said she knew exactly what she would be doing in five years. I was amazed. “How could she possibly know?” I wondered.

Where I used to think everything depended on fate or circumstances outside of my control, I now know and understand that you create your future. Dr Cindy Trimm had already created her future on her vision board so she knew exactly what she would be doing.

If you can’t envision where you want to be in five years, you will not get there. Infact, you are more likely to fall into other people’s plans. They will use you to make their dreams come true.

You can change your life by creating a new vision for your future. Remember that in life:

  • Nothing is set in stone.

  • You’re not a tree. You can move.

  • You’re not a rock. You can change.

  • Be like water and navigate obstacles without losing the essence of who you are.
